Brown Oak Tray

Regular price £48.00

Each of these wooden trays has been hand-turned from a single piece of solid Brown Oak, and finished in food-safe Danish Oil. With a weighty base but delicate edges, they're as useful as they are beautiful.

Brown Oak is created when an Oak tree is attacked by the 'Beefsteak' fungus (an edible mushroom known for its meaty look) - this spreads throughout the wood discolouring it. When the wood is felled and dried, the fungus dies but leaves behind the dark colouring.

The tray has a gentle curved base on the inside, great used as serving dishes alongside a buffet or cheeseboard, alternatively they make fantastic bar trays or trinket dishes.

Selwyn House is formed by Sean Best and Ellie Smalls, who met studying Fine Art at Leeds Arts University. Always drawn to making things, Sean bought a second-hand lathe and began teaching himself woodturning. An all-consuming obsession for understanding and working with wood followed, and after making the move back to Ellie’s home county of Derbyshire in 2017, they formed Selwyn House, combining their creative talents to create small-batch handmade tableware & homeware from the best British-grown timbers they could get their hands on.
